  How Does Iron Help Me To Have A Healthy Pregnancy?



There is rarely a time in a woman’s life when she needs to be concerned about being healthy than during pregnancy. Everything that she takes into her body has the potential to be passed along to her developing baby. It is extremely important that a woman who is pregnant get enough of certain vitamins and minerals to have a healthy pregnancy. Because of this, there are prenatal vitamin supplements that are specifically designed around the pregnant woman’s nutritional needs. One of the key ingredients in these prenatal supplements is iron.

Many times, a woman may not get enough iron in general. During pregnancy, they need even more iron than usual. The body of a pregnant woman needs iron for a variety of reasons. One of the key reasons that a pregnant woman needs more iron is that her body is making more blood when she is pregnant, all in order to support her growing baby. To keep from having low iron, which can lead to anemia during pregnancy, you should generally take a prenatal supplement that contains the recommended dose of iron.

Experts recommend around 27 milligrams of iron each day during pregnancy. This is around twice the recommended amount of iron for when you are not pregnant. Your health care provider will likely recommend a prenatal supplement that contains anywhere from 30 to 60 milligrams of iron. For women who tend to have low iron before pregnancy, it is possible that their health care provider will recommend a larger supplement, perhaps in the 60 milligram to 120 milligram range. This is especially true if you were anemic prior to becoming pregnant.

For some women, the iron contained in a prenatal vitamin may trigger morning sickness, or make their morning sickness more frequent or more intense. If this is the case, you should not stop taking your prenatal vitamin. Instead, you should speak with your health care provider about the problem, and see if there is another way that you can get the iron you need in order to have a healthy pregnancy.
