Why Is Vitamin A Important During Pregnancy?

Vitamin A is one of the more important vitamins that you can get during pregnancy. Generally, when we think about prenatal nutritional needs, we think about iron and folic acid. While it is true that both of these are integral to a healthy and safe pregnancy, Vitamin A does have an important role to play during pregnancy as well.

Vitamin A is one of the key components in cell differentiation. Cell differentiation is a significant part of the way that your baby’s body grows and develops inside of your womb. in addition, Vitamin A helps to boost your immune system. Taking vitamin A during pregnancy strengthens your body against infections and against other sorts of problems. Because your baby’s immune system is still developing, and will continue to develop even after your baby is born, it is important that your immune system be functioning as highly as it can. Vitamin A is an important part of that. Finally, there is some research to suggest that a deficiency of vitamin A may actually increase the risk that your baby will be born with certain birth defects.

In the 1990s, there were some concerns that an overdose of Vitamin A during pregnancy could cause problems for a woman or for her baby during pregnancy. Having said that, there are some things to keep in mind. First of all, those studies have not been repeated, nor were they entirely conclusive. Second, very few people can get too much vitamin A, as it would take an almost deliberate attempt to get as much vitamin A as caused problems in those studies. It is much more common for a woman to have a deficiency in Vitamin A during pregnancy or at any other time than it is for her to get too much vitamin A. Finally, Vitamin A is generally not placed directly in a supplement. Instead, the vitamin A takes the form of beta-carotene, which the body then converts to vitamin A. The body only converts the beta-carotene to vitamin A on an as-needed basis, however. It would be virtually impossible, barring some other sort of physical ailment, for someone to get too much vitamin A from beta-carotene.
