There are several things that can cause an infant to have a misshaped head. The most common sort of misshaped head occurs in a newborn infant. In many cases, after an infant is born, their head will be very cone shaped. This is due to the shifting of the plates in the infant’s skull that occurs during a vaginal birth. During a vaginal birth, the plates in the infant’s skull will shift in order for the entire head to be able to pass all the way through the birth canal. Incidentally, it is also relatively common for newborns to have a very flat nose. This, too, occurs as the baby passes through the birth canal. The only way to prevent this sort of misshaped head would be to have a Cesarean Section. Of course, this is completely unnecessary, as the infant’s head, and their nose for that matter, will slowly take a more normal shape over the first few days after birth.
Sometimes, an infant’s misshaped head can be caused by sleeping position. This is especially common when a baby sleeps on his or her stomach. As the baby sleeps, the weight of their head pushes down on their skull, and causes those plates to shift. The best way to prevent your infant from getting a misshaped head due to sleeping position is to make sure you are always putting your infant to sleep on his or her back.
There is another condition that can cause an infant to get a misshaped head, although this condition cannot be prevented. This is known as craniosynostosis. This is a condition where the spaces between the plates of the skull fuse together too early. This causes the infant’s head to be misshaped. Craniosynostosis is a dangerous condition that can cause permanent damage to your infant. While you cannot prevent your infant from getting a misshaped head due to craniosynostosis, the good news is that the condition can be corrected if it is identified early enough.
