Diaper rash can be a frustrating condition for your baby. In order to understand how best to treat this frustrating condition, it can be helpful to know a little bit first about what can cause diaper rash.
In some cases, diaper rash may be caused by irritants to the skin. This can happen, for instance, when the baby goes too long without a diaper change. Prolonged exposure to urine or feces can irritate your baby’s skin. In other cases, diaper rash is going to be caused just by friction. This will typically happen in the areas of the diaper that have elastic. So, the thigh areas and the waist area tends to be where this sort of diaper rash occurs. You can avoid this sort of diaper rash by making sure that they diapers you are using are properly sized to your baby. Diaper rash can also be caused by an allergic reaction. Diaper rash from an allergic reaction may look a little bit like poison oak, and can often be accompanied by an irritant rash.
The most natural treatment for diaper rash is, first, just to let your baby get some air to the diaper area. Allowing your baby to lie on a blanket or on a towel, naked can help that diaper area to begin to heal. Doing this as frequently as possible will help it to clear up faster. Really, prevention is often the best medicine. Making sure that the elastic on diapers is not too tight may help. Using natural laundry detergents can help to avoid diaper rash too. Making sure that you change your baby frequently, especially when your baby already has a diaper rash, should help to clear it up some as well.
There are, of course, the over-the-counter diaper rash medications available. However, many of these products contain ingredients that some parents would prefer not to expose their children to, such as propylene-glycol, or sodium lauryl sulfate. The good news here is that there are a variety of all-natural diaper creams that rely on milder, natural ingredients, such as aloe vera, shea butter, calendula, avocado butter, or any combination of herbs and natural oils.
