Having an itchy belly is just one of the many discomforts that a woman will experience during pregnancy. Even if a woman gains weight in a steady fashion, her expanding belly is going to itch from time to time. As her skin stretches, she is going to be able to feel it. While not every woman will wind up from stretch marks due to pregnancy, some degree of itching or another is extremely common. This itchiness isn’t always confined to the belly; it can occur on other parts of the body, including the arms, thighs, and breasts. Often, this itching will continue during the postpartum period, when the woman’s skin is beginning to contract back into place. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to reduce this itchiness during pregnancy.
One of the best ways to go about reducing itchiness during pregnancy is to keep the skin moisturized. Avoiding dry skin, by keeping away from hot showers or baths, will help also. Sometimes, using a milder soap can the skin from becoming too dry as well.
There are even natural products that can help with reducing itchiness during pregnancy. There are, for example, belly creams, belly lotions, and belly butters, that contain ingredients that can not only help to keep the skin moisturized, but can also help with stretch marks. These sorts of products typically rely on things like lavender, chamomile, calendula, apricot oil, and marshmallow root. There are also massage oils and skin oils that contain these same sorts of herbal remedies that can help with reducing itchiness during pregnancy as well.
Herbal baths may help with reducing itchiness during pregnancy, too. A bath that uses oatmeal, as well as some of the herbs mentioned, can provide not only some relief from the itchiness of pregnancy, but they can also help to soothe a woman’s other aches and pains, from swollen feet to leg cramps.
If your itching is severe, intense, or persistent, you should speak with your health care provider. It may be that there is some other problem, beyond pregnancy, that is causing your itchiness.
