When we think about breastfeeding, we often think about starting breastfeeding. We think about preparing our body to breastfeed, or we think about the process of breastfeeding. We worry about things like engorgement, and about things like the way that our baby will latch on. We worry about nipple soreness, and nipple cracking. However, one of the things that we really don’t often think too much about ahead of time is how we should go about preparing our body for weaning. Believe it or not, there are things that you can do to prepare your body for weaning that will make the process much more bearable for you.
One of the things that you can do to prepare your body for weaning is to use herbs. Certain herbs will help to decrease your milk supply as you are in the process of weaning, which will help you to avoid getting engorged when you are weaning. One of the best herbs to use to decrease your milk supply and prepare your body for weaning is sage. Other herbs that might help to prepare your body for weaning might include peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, oregano, and cabbage leaves. You can use these herbs to make a herbal tea, or you can make them into a pressed massage oil and use them as an ointment. There are even herbal teas and herbal ointments available that have done all of this work for you, that you can buy with these herbs already in them.
In addition to herbal ways to prepare your body for weaning, there are other things you can do to reduce your milk supply. Taking birth control pills that contain estrogen will generally reduce your milk supply. Taking Sudafed regularly is also thought to reduce your milk supply. Finally, the pace at which you are weaning will greatly determine the effect on your body. If you wean slowly over a period of weeks, your body is much more likely to be able to handle the weaning process.
