Buying A Car Seat – New Or Used?

A car seat is one of the most important items that you will purchase for your infant. Car seats, when used properly, have been proven to prevent injury and even to save lives. There are even government regulations that specify how car seats are manufactured, how they are tested, and how they are installed. While car seats do not prevent accidents from happening, they do tend to lessen the chances that a baby will be injured or killed when there is an accident.

There are some things to keep in mind when buying a car seat. One of the first things to think about when buying a car seat is whether to buy new or used. The obvious advantage to buying a used car seat is the cost. You can usually buy a used car seat for much less than you can buy a new car seat. In addition, it is possible that you might be able to buy a “nicer” car seat for a lower price if you buy a used car seat.

Having said that, you need to be careful when thinking about buying a used car seat. First of all, it is important to research the brand and model, to make sure that the particular car seat you are considering is in line with current safety regulations. These regulations change with some frequency, so it is likely that a car seat purchased just ten years ago will be out of compliance with current safety standards. The other thing that you need to take care with when buying a used car seat is the car seat’s history. If you are buying a car seat from a trusted friend or family member, you can probably take their word as to whether the car seat has ever been in an accident. However, if you are considering buying a used car seat from a stranger, you can’t be certain that the car seat has not been in an accident. Even if a car seat looks fine visually, it is still possible that there are structural problems with the used car seat if it has been in an accident.

If you do not have a trusted source from which to purchase a car seat that meets current safety standards, you are much better off buying a new car seat instead of a used car seat. While the new car seat may cost more, it is always worth the extra expense to insure the safety of your precious cargo.
