Probiotics are one of the newest and most exciting types of medicinal supplements that have been discovered in recent years. The fact of the matter is that simple bacteria, which we normally associate with illness and infection, are actually an important part of the human body’s ecosystem. Probiotics have been able to help adults, children, and even infants with a variety of conditions. Probiotics have even been shown, in some cases, to help with skin conditions such as eczema.
Eczema can be caused by any number of things. In many cases, especially in infants, eczema is actually the result of an allergic reaction. Many times, this reaction is to a food of one sort or another. Whether it is an allergy to cows’ milk, eggs, soy, or any number of other types of food, probiotics are an especially effective way to help with eczema.
How probiotics help with eczema is fairly straight forward. To understand how this happens, however, it is important to understand a little bit about what probiotics are and what exactly it is that probiotics do in the body. These beneficial bacteria are an important part of what makes up a person’s gut flora, or the environment within a person’s gastrointestinal tract. These bacteria help the gastrointestinal tract in a variety of ways. For example, they help to synthesize vitamins. Probiotics help the process of digestion itself. They help to boost the immune system. They even help with breaking down nutrients and minerals for the body to use. In terms of food allergies and eczema, probiotics create something of a barrier between the allergen and the gastrointestinal tract, which in turn helps to minimize the allergic reaction.
Probiotics help with eczema not only in that they can be a useful tool in treating eczema, but when probiotics are used early in an infant’s life they may actually reduce the risk that the infant will develop eczema later on.
