Are There Natural Treatments For Mastitis?

The fact of the matter is that most treatments for mastitis are natural. Only in extreme cases, where mastitis has been allowed to become very severe, are medications or other drastic measures, including hospitalization, necessary. Generally, mastitis can be treated naturally long before it leads to a problem like a breast abscess. An abscess refers to a boil under the skin that is filled with pus. This abscess may even need to be treated by draining it in a hospital, via an incision in the breast. This is why it is important to identify and treat mastitis earlier rather than later. The good news is that mastitis is treated relatively easily.

The first of the natural treatments for mastitis is just to keep nursing. Emptying the breast and clearing out those milk ducts will help the healing process. The good news here is that your infection does not present any danger to your baby at all. Your breast milk contains antibodies that protect your little one from the infection. If the breast with mastitis is sore, you can start on the breast without mastitis and switch over to the one that does have mastitis after a bit. Make sure that you vary your position, and that your baby is able to empty all of your milk.

There are all natural products that you can use to treat mastitis as well. You can use a breast compress, for example. Many experts recommend alternating between a cold compress and a warm compress for maximum effectiveness. Many breast compresses are designed to be used either hot or cold. In addition, beyond the basic breast compress, there are herbal compresses that you can use as well.

If your mastitis does not seem to be getting better, you should speak with your health care provider. If necessary, he may prescribe an antibiotic to clear up the mastitis.
