  Dealing With The Baby Blues

Nearly every new mother has, at some time or another, experienced at least a little bit of the baby blues. The fact of the matter is that the shifting levels of the hormones progesterone and estrogen that take place after birth can really mess with a woman’s emotions. In some cases, the baby blues might be brought on by situational factors, such as marital or financial difficulties, or having little support from family or friends. Having said that, it is not always possible to pin a cause on the baby blues. It is important to recognize, however, when you have a slight case of the baby blues and when you may have postpartum depression.

The baby blues are, for the most part, easily treated. In many cases, all you need is to take a few minutes and engage in a stress-relieving activity. Drinking a cup of calming herbal tea, for example, helps many women deal with the baby blues. In some cases, just talking to a friend for a few minutes may be enough to do it. Generally speaking, the baby blues should even pass by on their own within a couple of hours at the most.

In contrast to the baby blues, postpartum depression can be extremely debilitating. It can also rob a new mother of some of the joys of having her new baby. Post partum depression affects as many as 1 out of 8 women during the first few months of their child’s life. Fortunately, there are treatments that can help to lessen the symptoms of postpartum depression. If left untreated, postpartum depression can lead to more serious conditions such as postpartum psychosis.

The good news is that postpartum depression is treatable. The most successful treatment of post partum depression will likely include a combination of therapy, antidepressant medications, and a social support structure. In addition, many women have had success with herbal remedies, such as herbal teas or herbal supplements, or even aromatherapy in helping out with postpartum depression. Together, these treatments will exponentially increase a woman’s chances of dealing with postpartum depression successfully.
