Weaning can be something of an uncomfortable process. Your body takes some time to adjust to your baby’s reduced need for milk. During this process, your breasts can become tender and sore, as your breasts fill with more milk than what your baby is going to consume. Fortunately, there are some ways that you can go about making weaning more comfortable.
One way you can make weaning more comfortable is to help your body start to produce less milk. There are, for example, herbal teas that you can drink that will help to dry up your milk. Sage tea, for example, can help in this regard. Sage tea has within it a natural type of hormone which will help to decrease your milk supply. There are other herbs as well, such as parsley, which can help with this process.
If your breasts become engorged while weaning, there are several things you can do to make them more comfortable. You can use an herbal compress, for example. These compresses may contain things like chamomile and other herbs. Some of them may even have cabbage leaves and/or tea leaves, which have been used for many years as breast compresses by themselves.
Another thing that you can do to make weaning more comfortable is to take 200 mg of Vitamin B6 every day, as this will help with engorgement. Also, to relieve engorgement, you should express just enough milk to soften your breasts, but not enough to empty them all the way. Wearing a bra for support, but not one that is too tight, may help as well. The process of binding your breasts, which was once a common practice, is not recommended, as binding the breast may lead to an infection, and may make weaning much less comfortable if this occurs.
It may take some time for your milk to dry up. For some women, they will already have just a small amount of milk when they start to wean, so weaning will probably be more comfortable. For other women, it will probably take a few weeks to wean, and it can be much more uncomfortable.
