Fenugreek is an extremely useful herb, especially when it comes to breastfeeding. Fenugreek can actually help to increase a woman’s supply of breast milk. This can be especially useful for the adoptive mother who is just starting to nurse, or for the mother who must be away from her infant for long periods of time and must pump her breast milk, such as a woman who works outside of the home. While fenugreek is useful for the nursing mother, there are some side effects to using fenugreek that a nursing mother should be aware of.
Fenugreek has been used for centuries as an herbal remedy. For the nursing mother, fenugreek gets its usefulness in that fenugreek contains galactagogues. Galactagogues are a chemical that helps to promote the activity of certain hormones. These hormones then, in turn, help to promote the production of breast milk. Fenugreek is thought to help increase your supply of breast milk when used for one to three days. It is thought that once the supply of breast milk has increased, a woman need not continue to use the fenugreek, as milk production should stay relatively steady once it reaches that level.
Fenugreek can be consumed in a variety of ways. In terms of using fenugreek to help with nursing, it should typically be ingested. This may be via a nutritional supplement, or it can be in the form of a tea made from ground fenugreek seeds. Regardless of the particular way that fenugreek is used, there are women who have experienced increased milk supply using it.
Some people have experienced side effects to using fenugreek. These include lowering of blood glucose sugar levels in women that have diabetes. In other women, fenugreek has been shown to aggravate the symptoms of asthma. If you have diabetes or asthma, you should probably speak with your health care provider before trying to use fenugreek in order to increase your supply of breast milk.
