Essential Oils To Use During Labor

The use of essential oils to help with an number of ailments, aches, and pains is becoming more and more common. People are recognizing the benefits of aromatherapy, and how exposure to specific essential oils can help them with a variety of conditions. Essential oils have a wide variety of applications, from soothing sore muscles to helping with digestive issues. There are even essential oils that you can use during labor.

During the first stage of labor is the time that essential oils tend to be most useful. During the early phase of labor, essential oils of lavender or neroli can be massaged into your chest, forehead, and temples, in order to help you relax. Essential oils of lavender and neroli again become useful during the active phase of labor, as they can help you to regain your focus, and keep practicing your breathing techniques and your relaxation exercises. In addition to those two essential oils, rose is also useful during the active phase. Finally, during the transitional phase when your contractions are coming faster and harder, you might use some different essential oils. You might use lavender, peppermint, and sage to give you the energy and the determination that you will need to get through your labor.

During the second stage of labor, there are also ways o use essential oils. You might use essential oils just prior to pushing, for example. You might use rosemary or peppermint to help you gather up the courage and the strength that you need to have in order to finish bringing your little one into the world.

As always, you shouldn’t use essential oils by themselves during labor. Instead, you should mix just a few drops of the particular essential oil that you would like to use into a base. This base is typically something like organic vegetable oil, or perhaps a mixing oil that is specifically designed to be used in aromatherapy.
