Are There Effective Drugs For Treating Colic?

Colic is something of a complicated thing. Researchers aren’t agreed on what it is that causes colic. It may well be that colic can be caused by different things for different babies. Still, there are some drugs that have been used for treating colic. These include anti-gas medications, antihistamines, and other types of drugs. In addition, there are other approaches to treating colic, including the use of probiotics.

Anti-gas drugs used for treating colic are based on the idea that colic is caused by trapped air in the digestive system of the baby. For this reason, many people have used simethicone and other anti-gas drugs for treating colic. In Europe, for example, simethicone is widely used for treating colic. However, there is some question about the overall effectiveness of anti-gas drugs for treating colic.

Antihistamines are sometimes recommended for treating colic. However, the effectiveness of antihistamines at treating colic is questionable at best. If antihistamines are able to help to treat colic, it is only because they tend to sedate the baby, rather than addressing the colic itself. Further, most over the counter antihistamines are not recommended for infants.

Other types of drugs used for treating colic might include antacids, antihistamines, antispasmodics, and sedatives. Here again, some of these drugs have been effective for some babies with colic, but not for many others. More research is certainly needed in these areas.

One of the most effective treatments for colic is not actually a drug. The probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri, also known as L. reuteri and L. reuteri Protectis, has been demonstrated in many different clinical studies to be more effective at treating colic that some of the drugs used for treating colic, such as simethicone. The advantage to something like Lactobacillus reuteri is that there are generally no harmful side effects, as Lactobacillus reuteri is just one of the many beneficial bacteria found naturally in the body’s digestive system.
