There are a variety of things that parents who have a baby with colic may try in order to calm their baby. While some of these treatments may not be effective for every baby, the fact of the matter is that most babies will respond at least a little bit to just about any treatment. Because there are few or no medical options available to treat colic, apart from identifying and treating a medical problem that may or may not be causing the colic, parents have had to turn to some forms of alternative treatments. One of the most common alternative treatments that can help with colic is the use of herbal oils.
First of all, it is important to understand a little bit about how your infant with colic can be treated with herbal oils. While adults might add some herbal oils to a beverage, or use them in some other fashion, it is important that you are careful about how you give herbal oils to an infant. Generally speaking, the best way for you to administer herbal oils in order to help your infant with colic is to purchase “Gripe Water,” which contains those sorts of herbal oils. There are several different brands of Gripe Water, each with their own specific ingredients.
In terms of the actual herbal oils that can help with colic, there are five specific oils that may help. The first of these is Caraway seed oil. This herbal oil is known to help ease gastrointestinal issues, and is especially useful for relieving gas pain. Another herbal oil that functions much in the same way as caraway seed oil is Cardamom seed oil. This herbal oil also helps to relax muscles. Dill weed seed oil settles the stomach, and also has antibacterial properties. Clove bud oil is another herbal oil that has antibacterial properties. Finally, cinnamon bark oil is also known to reduce gas as well as vomiting.
Each of the herbal oils listed above are generally recognized as safe for infants. You should, of course, speak with your health care provider before starting your infant on any sort of supplement, including herbal oils that can help with colic.
