Are There Herbs That Can Help With My Baby’s Fever?

A fever is a relatively common condition for a baby to experience. In fact, just about every baby will experience a fever at one time or another. The fever could be caused by an illness, for example. Very often, a fever is a sign that your baby’s body is fighting off an infection of some sort or another. In most cases, a fever will pass on its own. Still, while your little one has his or her fever, there are a variety of things that you can do to help your baby feel more comfortable. There are even herbs that can help with your baby’s fever.

Some of the herbs that have been traditionally used to help with a baby’s fever include things like peppermint, elder flower, chamomile, lemon balm leaf, and licorice. These herbs are often used in a herbal tea. For infants, it is generally recommended that the mother drink the herbal tea, as the herbs will pass through her breast milk to her baby. If you wish, you can certainly speak with your health care provider about the safety of giving an herbal tea directly to your baby. If you get the approval from your health care provider, there are some things to remember. First, you will want to make sure that the tea is no warmer than the formula you would give to your baby. You will also want to start your baby on the herbal tea with small amounts to start with. An ounce or so is a good measure to begin with. The reason that you want to start with the smaller amount is that you want to make sure that your baby is not going to have a negative reaction to the tea. If your baby does not react negatively to the tea, you can give your baby up to four to six ounces of herbal tea in a given day. Giving your baby more than four to six ounces in a day creates a risk that your baby will not be hungry when it comes time to get the nutritious breast milk or formula that your baby needs to grow and to develop.

Many of the herbs that can help with your baby’s fever have also been released in smaller doses that are designed for infants. Your herbal retailer may have infant drops, for example, that contain some of these herbs. Here again, it is probably best to speak with your health care provider before using them.
