Baby Milestones From Nineteen Months To Two Years

Share |

By this point, it’s almost feeling like your baby is going to grow up on you. It will feel like she’s picking up new skills and words every day until one day you realize you’re having a real conversation with her. Before you know it, the baby stages will be a thing of the past, commemorated only in your scrapbooks and memories. So, enjoy these last vestiges of babyhood while you have them. And look forward to these milestones between the ages of nineteen months and two years old:

  • By nineteen months, he will likely be throwing a ball. Watch out, you may have the next Cy Young winner on your hands. His vocabulary will grow by leaps and bounds, reaching as many as 200 words. And, he’ll be eager to be your little helper around the house whenever he can.
  • By 20 months, she’s going to start climbing stairs. Be careful when she’s going down, though. That takes longer to master. She’ll be learning ten new words per day, so be careful which ones you use around her, as she’s likely to repeat them. She also may recognize when she needs to pee.
  • At 21 months, she’ll be telling you what simple pictures are, walking down stairs more or less proficiently, and may start organizing toys. She’ll be showing her first promise in the field of engineering, stacking a half dozen or so blocks before smashing them to the ground. Well, if not engineering, maybe demolition.
  • At 22 months old, she’ll be ready for soccer tryouts. Well, she’ll be able to kick a ball forward most of the time, anyhow. She also might be able to do simple puzzles, and even follow two step directions, such as “get the toy and bring it to me”.
  • At 23 months, she’s likely to start expressing what she likes and dislikes directly. Whether or not this is a good thing, parents everywhere are still trying to figure out. She’s likely to start showing more interest in playing with other kids directly, too. On top of all that, she’ll become a top notch entertainer, singing simple songs along with you, or in some cases even by herself.
  • At 24 months, he’s going to start understanding the difference between men, women, boys, and girls, but don’t worry, you’ve got a few years before he’s ready to date. He’s likely to be ready for potty training if you haven’t done so yet, and he will be starting to speak in understandable words and sentences. Welcome to the terrible twos.
