Sore breasts and cracked nipples are, for many women, unfortunate side effects of breastfeeding. The fact of the matter is that the pain and discomfort that often accompanies breastfeeding can be excruciating. In some cases, it can even lead a woman to stop breastfeeding. Still, the woman who faces sore breasts due to breastfeeding does have some options. There are indeed things that she can do to help alleviate some of the pain and discomfort associated with breastfeeding. One of the best ways to alleviate sore breasts during breastfeeding is with the use of a breast compress.
Women have been using breast compresses when breastfeeding for a long time. In years past, it was common for a woman who was experiencing discomfort or pain while breastfeeding to use cold cabbage leaves as a compress for her breasts. For other women, warm tea bags or warm tea leaves have also been used. Both of these approaches illustrate something that we know to be true about various types of pain, whether it is from an injury, muscle soreness, or breastfeeding: both heat and cold can help to alleviate pain. In fact, many experts recommend alternating between heat and cold to alleviate this sort of soreness. The good news for the woman who is breastfeeding is that there are breast compresses that can be used both hot and cold.
Some breast compresses resemble an ice pack, or a hot water bottle. These sorts of breast compresses rely only on heat and cold to help with breastfeeding pain and discomfort. There are also herbal compresses, however. Herbal compresses may even contain ingredients like cabbage leaves and black tea, as it seems that both of these have healing properties for sore breasts beyond just the heat or cold that they can carry.
If you use a breast compress while breastfeeding, there are some things to keep in mind. For example, you will want to make sure not to use the compress immediately before feeding, as this may make your nipples too hot or too cold for your baby. Instead, you should use breast compresses after feeding, which is probably when you are feeling the most breast soreness anyways. You also can consider using breast compresses alongside other remedies for breastfeeding pain and discomfort, such as nipple butter, creams, or lotions.
