Can I Take Fertility Supplements When I Am Breastfeeding?

Share |

Fertility supplements are one of the best ways that a woman can increase her chances of becoming pregnant without medical intervention. From vitamins and minerals to specific herbs, fertility supplements may be able to help a woman who is struggling with fertility. Many fertility supplements have also been formulated not only to help a woman while she is struggling with fertility, but also to help her once she becomes pregnant. Having said that, not all fertility supplements are meant for all women at all times. In fact, when it comes to something like breastfeeding, most fertility supplements are not recommended.

There are specific reasons why you should not take fertility supplements when you are breastfeeding. First of all, breastfeeding is a natural deterrent to pregnancy. While it certainly is possible for a woman to become pregnant while they are breastfeeding, the fact of the matter is that most women will not begin to ovulate, and therefore not be able to become pregnant, until they are done breastfeeding.

In addition to the fact that fertility supplements probably won’t work when you are breastfeeding, there are other considerations. When you are breastfeeding, much of what you eat and drink will wind up being passed through your breast milk to your baby. Because of this, you should probably avoid fertility supplements, along with any other medications or nutritional supplements, while you are breast feeding unless those medications or supplements have been tested for women who are breastfeeding, or unless your health care provider recommends it.

While none of the ingredients in fertility supplements are generally thought to be harmful to you or to your baby while you are breastfeeding, it is probably worth it to err on the side of caution, and avoid fertility supplements when you are breastfeeding. For more information, you can contact the manufacturer of the fertility supplements to find out exactly what is in your fertility supplements, as well as your health care provider to see if any of those ingredients pose a problem.
