The fact of the matter is that sometimes stretch marks just cannot be prevented. This is especially true during pregnancy. In fact, it is estimated that somewhere around half of all pregnant women will wind up with some stretch marks after their pregnancy. Still, just because stretch marks are so common doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do what you can to prevent them. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent stretch marks, there may be things that you can do to lessen your chances of having stretch marks, or of lessening the severity of your stretch marks.
Stretch marks are caused when the skin is asked to stretch beyond what it normally is in a short period of time. One of the ways, then, that you can try to help stretch marks be prevented is by making sure that your weight gain during pregnancy doesn’t happen all at once, or too rapidly. By gaining weight at a steady pace during pregnancy, you allow the skin at least a little bit of time to adjust to things before it has to start stretching again. In addition, it is important that you gain the right amount of weight, as too much weight gain could also contribute to stretch marks.
There are herbal remedies that you can use to try to prevent stretch marks. These products tend to rely on things like cocoa butter, chamomile, and Vitamin E to help prevent stretch marks. Even if these remedies do not prevent stretch marks, they may speed up the healing process and help your stretch marks to become less visible over time.
Another way to try to prevent stretch marks is by keeping your skin moisturized. There are even some moisturizing creams that are specifically designed to help reduce or prevent stretch marks. These may also be based on some of the same types of herbal remedies. In addition to helping both your health and your baby’s health, eating a balanced and healthy diet can help to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. Specifically, good nutrition will help to strengthen your skin and to make it more healthy, and help it to stretch easier and to contract back after you have given birth. While it may not be entirely possible to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy, following these steps may lessen their impact, and may even lessen their severity.
