  Dealing With Postpartum Hemorrhoids

After your baby is born, you have enough on your mind without having to worry about hemorrhoids. Still, while many women will find that their hemorrhoids begin to disappear shortly after their baby is born, the fact of the matter is that, for many women, the hemorrhoids will stick around for quite a while. Particularly frustrating about all of this is the fact that hemorrhoids can often be distracting enough and frustrating enough that it is hard to think about much of anything else. This can make it difficult to enjoy your new baby, and to properly recover from the labor and birth experience. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to go about dealing with postpartum hemorrhoids.

The first thing that you can do to go about dealing with postpartum hemorrhoids is to make sure you are getting enough fiber in your diet. While it is not an instant solution, and while it isn’t exactly a fun or easy solution, the fact of the matter is that a diet that is high in fiber is really the best way to prevent hemorrhoids, and to treat them once you’ve got them. Getting enough fiber will not only soften your stool, it will increase the bulk of your stool. This, in turn, will help to relieve straining during bowel movements. Hard stool, as well as straining, will both aggravate hemorrhoids. You can get more fiber by eating foods that are higher in fiber, or by using a nutritional supplement that may have fiber in it. Two of the natural fiber supplements available are psyllium and ground flaxseeds. Even if fiber does not prevent your postpartum hemorrhoids, it may help you to deal with them more effectively.

There are also a variety of medicinal and herbal ways to deal with postpartum hemorrhoids. Certainly, there is Witch Hazel, which is one of the best treatments for hemorrhoids. Witch hazel is produced from the bark and the leaves of the Hamamelis virginiana plant. Witch Hazel has been used for many years to provide relief for hemorrhoids. It may be available in a balm, ointment, spray, and even medicated pads. There are also other herbs that may be used as natural remedies for hemorrhoids. These herbs might include calendula, yarrow, shea butter and St. John’s wort as well as certain essential oils such as peppermint oil or even lavender oil. Of course, now that your baby is born, you can generally use other medicinal solutions for hemorrhoids, such as topical creams and other medications designed to deal with hemorrhoids. Many women find, however, that the herbal remedies may work just as well.
