Diaper rash is one of those unfortunate things that parents often just have to deal with. Diaper rash is very often a normal and a natural part of the way that your baby’s body responds to his or her environment. There are any number of different causes of diaper rash, including moisture in the diaper area, skin’s prolonged exposure to feces or urine, chafing of the diaper area, diarrhea, allergic reactions to food, and even irritation from some chemical or fabric. There are a variety of diaper rash medications available to treat diaper rash, as well as many different natural alternatives.
The best medicine for diaper rash is just to get the diaper area to be dry. Placing your baby on a blanket or on a towel naked can allow that area to begin to do what it needs to do to heal. Allowing your baby to “air out” frequently will help the diaper rash to clear up faster. In addition, you might consider using herbal diaper rash creams and lotions, as many parents have found that these products do as well as medications at relieving diaper rash, at least when that diaper rash is not especially severe.
In terms of actual medications that are used for diaper rash, there are a variety of choices. For example, if your baby’s diaper rash is caused by a yeast infection, your health care provider might recommend that you use an over the counter cream such as clotrimazole. If the yeast infection is particularly severe, your health care provider may prescribe a nystatin ointment. In other cases, your baby’s diaper rash may be caused by a bacterial infection, and your health care provider might prescribe an antibiotic cream. Your health care provider may prescribe a corticosteroid cream, like hydrocortisone, to help reduce the amount of inflammation that occurs with the diaper rash. In some cases, however, the corticosteroid will actually make your baby’s diaper rash worse, so you should definitely consult with your health care provider if this winds up being the case.
