Do Saliva-Based Ovulation Tests Really Work?

There are a number of useful fertility products that have been released in the last couple of decades. These products range from nutritional supplements that may help to increase fertility to products such as software that will help you to track ovulation and your monthly cycle. One of the more interesting produces to come out has been the saliva-based ovulation test. Saliva-based ovulation tests really work, and are thought to be as much as 98% accurate according to their manufacturers.

There are some things that you should know about how saliva-based ovulation tests work. First of all, you have to use the saliva-based ovulation test properly. If you don’t use the product in a way that is consistent with the instructions, it may not give you accurate results. Second, you need to know that there are things that will interfere with the accuracy of saliva-based ovulation tests. Because the saliva-based ovulation tests work on the basis of measuring estrogen in a woman’s system, if a woman is pregnant it can affect the accuracy of the saliva-based ovulation test. This is also the case with menopause. In addition, some women have a level of estrogen that is naturally low, or a level of estrogen that is naturally high. Finally, if you have recently stopped using birth control pills it could give a false result on a saliva-based ovulation test.

Saliva-based ovulation tests are different from other ovulation predictors. Other ovulation predictors, such as ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) tend to check for the surge in Luteinizing Hormone (or LH for short) that occurs just before ovulation. Saliva-based ovulation tests don’t measure Luteinizing Hormone. Rather, saliva-based ovulation tests work by looking at estrogen. Saliva-based ovulation tests allow a woman to examine her saliva under a small microscope. When there are high levels of estrogen in a woman’s saliva, the saliva will go through a process known as saliva ferning. When this occurs, patterns known as “ferns” will form in the dried saliva. These patterns resemble frost on a window pane. The woman simply looks through the microscope at the slide in order to look for these ferns. If there are not ferns, she is not about to ovulate. If there are ferns present, she is about to ovulate within the next two days or so.
