Having a long cycle doesn’t exactly help you get pregnant. In fact, having a long cycle can actually lessen your chances of becoming pregnant to some degree. To understand how having a long cycle will affect your chances of getting pregnant, you need to understand some things about how a woman’s cycle works, especially regarding ovulation, and about how it is that conception can occur.
Ovulation occurs during a woman’s monthly cycle when one of her ovaries will release an egg into the fallopian tube. This egg can only survive for around one day in your fallopian tube. Therefore, a sperm would have to meet your egg pretty much right away when you ovulate. If the egg is not fertilized right away, then the egg, as well as the lining of the uterus, will be shed during your next menstrual period. Regardless of how long it is that your menstrual cycle lasts, you will ovulate every cycle, unless something is amiss. During your cycle, then, there is the potential for an egg to be fertilized for around 24 hours. This means that sperm that enter your body during the few days prior to ovulation and during ovulation could, potentially, make you pregnant. This means that you will be fertile for right around a week every cycle, no matter whether you have a long cycle or not.
So, if your cycle typically lasts around 35 days, you could get pregnant around one fifth of your cycle. If your cycle lasts for 28 days, you could get pregnant during about a quarter of your cycle. If you have a regular 28-day cycle, you might be fertile for about 95 days out of the year. If you have a 35 day cycle, you might be fertile for as few as 75 days a year. Your given chances of getting pregnant during a given cycle are about the same, but you will have fewer cycles over time in which you can try to get pregnant.
