  Easing Discomfort During Breastfeeding

Share |

Breastfeeding can be a time of discomfort. For many new mothers, tender and sensitive nipples are common during the first few days of breastfeeding. The fact of the matter is that nearly every woman will experience sore nipples during breastfeeding at one point or another. Sore nipples are just one of the unfortunate side effects that often can accompany breastfeeding. Fortunately, there are things that a nursing mother can do in order to help ease discomfort during breastfeeding.

Many women have used creams or lotions to help ease the discomfort that occurs during breastfeeding. There are many different kinds of creams and lotions that are available to be used. Many of these rely on all natural ingredients, such as cocoa butter, shea butter, or mango butter. They may also use herbs like calendula to help ease discomfort during breastfeeding.

A traditional and very common way to ease discomfort during breastfeeding is by using a breast compress. For years, women have used warm tea bags or cold cabbage leaves to ease the discomfort that occurs during breastfeeding. While you certainly can try these very basic sorts of compresses, if they don’t go far enough toward easing your discomfort during breastfeeding, you might consider a herbal breast compress. Herbal breast compresses may use a variety of herbs to help ease the discomfort of breastfeeding, and may also have other positive effects, such as helping to relieve stress. There are also gel-type compresses that you can use that can be used either cold or warm, and these too may help ease the discomforts of breastfeeding.

If you can’t seem to get any relief from the discomfort that you feel during breastfeeding, you may wish to speak with your health care provider. He or she may have helpful ideas or advice about how to ease your discomfort.
