When they are used properly, saliva-based ovulation predictors may be as much as 98% accurate, according to manufacturers. Having said that, there are some things that are known to interfere with the accuracy of saliva-based ovulation predictors. To understand how saliva-based ovulation predictors work can help you to know whether the results of a saliva-based ovulation predictor might be accurate or not.
Urine-based ovulation predictors typically check for the surge of Luteinizing Hormone (also known as LH) that generally occurs just prior to ovulation. Saliva-based ovulation predictors work on a similar principle. However, saliva-based ovulation predictors check for a rise in estrogen, rather than in luteinizing hormone. This rise in estrogen generally happens just about two days prior to the time that you are going to ovulate.
Saliva-based ovulation predictors work by allowing a woman to examine her saliva through a microscope. When there are high levels of estrogen in a woman’s saliva, the saliva will go through a process known as saliva ferning. When this occurs, patterns known as “ferns” will form in the dried saliva. These patterns resemble frost on a window pane. The woman simply looks through the microscope at the slide in order to look for these ferns. If there are ferns present, she is about to ovulate within the next two days or so. If there are not ferns, she is not about to ovulate.
There are some things, then, that could interfere with the accuracy of saliva-based ovulation predictors. Being pregnant will change levels of estrogen in your system, and may interfere with a saliva-based ovulation predictor. Menopause can do the same. Some women may have a naturally high or a naturally low level of estrogen, and this can obviously affect the accuracy of a saliva-based ovulation test. If you have recently stopped birth control medication, this can cause the saliva ferning as well. In addition, it is important that you follow the instructions carefully on your saliva-based ovulation predictor in order to get the most accurate result.
