Essential oils can be used for aromatherapy in a variety of different ways. The method that you use with the essential oils for aromatherapy is dependant, at least in part, on what it is that you hope the essential oils to help with. Regardless of the specific method that you choose to use, essential oils function, just like it sounds, through their aromas, or their smells. The path that the essential oils take to get into our bodies is through our sense of smell, also known as the olfactory system.
One of the most common ways that essential oils are used for aromatherapy is through aromatherapy massage. This can include professional aromatherapy massage, or it can be as simple as massaging a particular essential oil into your own skin. Again, while it has been mentioned that essential oils enter our bodies through our sense of smell, there are some who believe that the essential oils used for aromatherapy may actually enter the body through the skin during an aromatherapy massage.
There are other methods of using essential oils for aromatherapy. For example, if you wish to use essential oils for skin care, you can put a few drops into a pint of warm water, or into a facial steamer if you have one. You can use essential oils for aromatherapy in by adding them to a facial mask, as well. You can add essential oils to a lotion or a cream that you are going to use. If you want to use essential oils for aromatherapy in order to help with sinus problems, you might put the oils into a pot of steaming water, and use a simple towel tent to inhale the vapors. You might also add several drops to a cool mist humidifier. For more general use, such as for relaxation, you can add the essential oils to a bath for aromatherapy. You might use a compress with essential oils. You might use a spritzer that has essential oils in it. The spritzer is becoming one of the more popular ways to use essential oils for aromatherapy, with many commercial products available for a wide range of purposes. There are even aromatherapy spritzers designed to help a woman during her postpartum period.
