How Can I Avoid Needing An Episiotomy?

Share |

The fact of the matter is that, sometimes, the birthing canal just doesn’t stretch like it ought to. It may be, for example, that the birthing canal is narrow, or that the skin involved does not have a very high degree of elasticity. In some cases, a baby can just be big, so big that he or she just won’t fit. The physics of putting a baby through the birth canal dictate that, many times, there will be the need for an episiotomy.

An episiotomy is most often used when it looks as thought there may be a risk that the perineum will tear. The perineum, which is located between the vagina and the anus, will often tear if an episiotomy is not performed. An episiotomy takes place when an incision is made into the perineum that allows a baby to pass through he birth canal when they might not otherwise not have fit. The fact of the matter is that an episiotomy will heal better and it will heal faster than when the perineum tears during childbirth.

While there are no guarantees that you can avoid needing an episiotomy, there may be some things that you can do in order to avoid needing an episiotomy. One of the ways to try to avoid needing an episiotomy is to use perineal massage. Perineal massage is, just as it sounds, the massaging of the perineum. Perineal massage is most useful with a perineal massage oil. Perineal massage oil can come in any number of different sorts. Herbal massage oils for the perineum are especially useful. Some of the types of herbs that you might find in a perineal massage oil, that can help with the elasticity of the perineum, might include blue and black cohosh, lavender, and kuki nut. Some of these herbs, such as blue and black cohosh, are also thought to help make contractions stronger and more regular, and have the added benefit of helping to move labor along.
