How Can I Be Sure I’m Producing Enough Breast Milk?

Share |

The fact of the matter is that, in general, a woman’s body is going to respond to a baby’s need for breast milk proportionately. That is to say that, the more that you nurse, and the more breast milk that your baby takes in, the more breast milk that your body will produce. Having said that, the fact of the matter is also that it can take some time for this equilibrium to set in. For this reason, it is good to be aware of how to know if you are producing enough breast milk.

The best way to be sure if you’re producing enough breast milk is to watch your baby as he nurses. It is normal for your baby to be going to both breasts and nursing until they are both soft and drained. It is not uncommon for a baby to nurse only at one breast during a feeding. Generally, unless your baby seems to be still hungry after nursing, it is likely that you are producing enough breast milk.

There are some cases where a woman is more likely to not produce enough breast milk, however. Adoptive mothers who are nursing, for example, may find that, at least initially, they have a hard time keeping up with baby’s demands. The same can be said of the working mother who needs to use a breast pump for when she is not able to be with her little one. Then there are also women who may just find that their milk ducts are a bit lethargic. Fortunately for these women, there are solutions for when you are not producing enough breast milk. Many of these solutions rely on galactagogues. Galactagogues are substances that help to increase a woman’s breast milk supply. Galactagogues are found in at least three different herbs: alfalfa, fenugreek, and blessed thistle.

If you are concerned that you are not producing enough breast milk, you may wish to speak with your health care provider to make sure that there is nothing, medically, that may be affecting your breast milk supply. After that you might also consider the use of herbal remedies containing galactagogues. There are a variety of herbal teas, for example, that will contain some or all of the herbs that contain galactagogues.
