How Can I Ease My Morning Sickness If I Can’t Keep Anything Down?

Morning sickness, for many women, is a serious inconvenience. It can make the time that you should be reveling in your pregnancy a miserable one. For some women, whose morning sickness includes nausea, however, morning sickness can be dangerous. If you can’t keep anything down, it is likely that you are going to have a hard time easing your morning sickness. In addition, if you are not able to keep enough food and liquids down, you run the risk of having nutritional deficiencies or becoming dehydrated.

If your morning sickness is accompanied by severe vomiting and you can’t keep anything down over a period of days, you might have Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Hyperemesis Gravidarum typically is severe enough that it will prevent the mother from taking in enough food or fluids, and can often lead to a variety of problems for both the woman and her baby. If it goes untreated, Hyperemesis Gravidarum can lead to hypoglycemia, malnutrition, renal failure, atrophy, and a whole host of other ailments and problems. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is considered to be a medical emergency. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is most often treated with an IV which will provide rehydration, as well as nutritional elements that both mother and baby need.

If your morning sickness is severe enough that you can’t keep anything down but is not prolonged, there may be some things that you can do to ease your morning sickness. Obviously, things like herbal teas probably won’t be able to help, and neither will nutritional supplements. In this case, you might try some alternative therapies. Some women have used acupuncture to ease morning sickness. More commonly, women have looked to acupressure to ease their morning sickness when they can’t keep anything down. There are a variety of wristbands that use acupressure principles in order to try to ease your morning sickness. These wrist bands are often used for other types of nausea, including motion sickness, as well. Combined with preventative measures such as avoiding spicy or fatty foods and keeping hydrated, you may even be able to use acupressure bands to avoid morning sickness altogether.
