How Can I Help My Baby’s Father Bond With Our Baby Before He Is Born?

In many ways, a baby’s father is at a natural disadvantage when it comes to bonding with his baby. Even if we remove the stereotypical gender roles that tend to portray men as being emotionally distant and unconnected in general, there are still some very basic ways that a mother can bond with a baby that a father cannot. For example, a father can feed a baby with a bottle; a mother can feed a baby with her own body. This does not mean that fathers cannot bond with their babies, only that the way that they go about bonding with their babies can often take a bit more effort in terms of creating opportunities for that bonding. Even before a baby is born, however, there are ways to help the baby’s father bond with his baby before he is born.

Before a baby is born, when he is still inside the womb, he can already feel and respond to human touch. With the mother’s permission, of course, a father can touch his baby through the mother’s belly. Giving the mother a belly massage is another way to encourage this sort of touch. In addition, this may be a good opportunity for the mother and the father to experience some intimacy, which is something that can get lost by the wayside during pregnancy.

Music is another great way to help your baby’s father bond with your baby before he is born. It has been demonstrated that music provides a harmonious and calm environment for your baby in the womb. Some studies suggest that, after they are born, babies can even recognize music that they have heard while they were in the womb. This research also shows that babies prefer classical music, and music whose beat comes close to the mother’s heart beat. This is not to say that other music is harmful, or that it will not allow you to bond with your baby before he is born, but rather that certain types of music may be more soothing to your baby than others. There are even specific CDs that include this sort of relaxing music, specifically for the purpose of bonding with your baby before he is born. A father can even combine this sort of relaxing music with a massage.

Ultimately, by helping your baby’s father to bond with your baby before he is born, you will help your baby’s father to begin to see your baby as a present reality, rather than a far-off thing.
