Diaper rash can be a rather frustrating thing for your baby to have. The fact of the matter is, however, that most babies will experience diaper rash at some point or another. Fortunately, there are things that you can do as a parent to help prevent diaper rash in your baby.

To know how you can prevent diaper rash in your baby, it is important to first understand exactly what sorts of things can cause diaper rash. Diaper rash can be triggered by any number of things. Excessive moisture in the diaper area can contribute to diaper rash. When the skin is exposed for a prolonged period of time to feces or to urine, diaper rash can occur also. Chafing of the diaper area can contribute to diaper rash. Diaper rash can also be caused by an allergic reaction to food or irritation from a chemical or from fabric.

To prevent diaper rash, there are things that you can do. For example, if you use diapers that have elastic that closes around the belly or the legs, you should make sure that they are sized such that they aren’t too tight. Air should be able to circulate. Make sure that you change your baby’s diaper frequently, as well. If you are using cloth diapers, you might consider switching detergent or fabric softener, as it could be one of these items that is irritating your little one’s skin. If it is practical, you can allow your baby to go without a diaper for a few minutes each day, which will help to keep the diaper area dried out.

There is some research to suggest that breastfeeding may actually help to prevent diaper rash. It is thought that breastfeeding changes the acid levels in your baby’s bowel movements, and is thought to boost your baby’s resistance to infections. More research in this area is needed, however.
