How Can I Track My Fertility If I Have An Irregular Cycle?

It is estimated that around one out of every ten women will have an irregular cycle. An irregular cycle is defined as a cycle that is shorter than 25 days, or longer than 35 days. There are any number of things that can cause a woman to have an irregular cycle. For example, dietary factors can lead to an irregular cycle, and so can too much strenuous exercise. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS for short) and hormonal imbalances can also cause an irregular cycle. It can be especially difficult for the woman who always has an irregular cycle to track her fertility.

Tracking fertility involves, for most women, a variety of techniques. You might use basal body temperature, for example, to be able to tell when you ovulated during a cycle. This will give you a good idea of when you will ovulate the next cycle. However, if you have an irregular cycle, basal body temperature doesn’t really tell you much. Tracking cervical mucus changes can help you track your fertility if you have an irregular cycle, but unfortunately these changes are a bit subjective and cannot be relied on by themselves.

Some women with irregular cycles have been able to track their fertility using Ovulation Predictor Kits. The difficulty with Ovulation Predictor Kits for a woman with an irregular cycle is that it can be difficult to know what day of her cycle a woman should begin testing on. If she tests too soon, she will run out of test materials. If she tests too late, obviously, she will not detect ovulation at all.

If you have an irregular cycle, you will probably have to use a combination of every available method to track your fertility. You might need to go through two or three Ovulation Predictor Kits in a month, all while charting cervical mucus and watching for the basal body temperature spike so that you can know for certain that ovulation has passed.
