How Can I Treat Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap can be a frustrating condition for your baby to have. On the one hand, cradle cap is not dangerous, and will very rarely be much more than a nuisance. On the other hand, the constant flaking and dryness that comes with cradle cap can make your beautiful little bundle of joy look like he is falling apart. Fortunately, there are ways that you can treat cradle cap.

The treatments for cradle cap fall into two basic categories: medicinal and natural. On the medicinal side of things, there are several options available to treat cradle cap. For example, you can use cortisone cream, which can be purchased over the counter, to treat cradle cap. If this treatment does not work, your health care provider may be able to write a prescription for a stronger sort of cortisone cream that can be used to treat cradle cap. There are also medicinal shampoos that can be used to treat cradle cap. These shampoos use the same sorts of ingredients that are in adult dandruff shampoos. You should, of course, speak with your health care provider before using this type of shampoo to treat your baby’s cradle cap.

There are also natural ways to treat cradle cap. You might try to treat cradle cap with herbal skin lotions, for example. There are many herbal lotions that are designed specifically with your baby’s skin in mind. Some of these lotions may also serve a dual purpose, in that they can treat cradle cap as well as other conditions, such as diaper rash. These natural ways to treat cradle cap rely on natural ingredients like olive oil or shea butter, rather than on chemicals like cortisone. Some of these lotions may contain herbal antifungal and antibacterial essential oils, as well.

Even if your efforts to treat cradle cap aren’t especially successful, you can relax in the fact that cradle cap is temporary, and that there are no long-term negative effects of your baby having cradle cap.
