How Can Probiotics Help With Constipation?

Probiotics have been shown to have a number of beneficial effects on the human body. From being able to help a baby with colic to being able to delay the onset of eczema, probiotics have provided many people with relief from a variety of conditions. While research hasn’t demonstrated yet all of the possible positive effects of probiotics, there is emerging evidence that suggests that probiotics may even be able to help with constipation.

Probiotics serve a number of purposes in the body. Probiotics are actually a type of beneficial bacteria. These are the same strains of bacteria that can naturally be found in a person’s digestive system. These bacteria help the body do its job of digestion. They also help with the absorption of a variety of nutrients. They even help the body to synthesize vitamins. These bacteria in the digestive system also help to create a barrier against harmful substances, such as harmful bacteria, toxins, and antigens.

Certainly, probiotics have been demonstrated to help with various issues related to the bowel. For example, probiotics such as L. reuteri Protectis have been proven to reduce or eliminate diarrhea. This is especially true concerning diarrhea that has been caused as a side effect of taking antibiotic medications. In addition, probiotics also help to maintain intestinal health. By keeping the flora in the intestines in balance, food is digested and assimilated much more easily. This, in turn, can lead to a reduction in constipation.

To be certain, probiotics cannot help with constipation in every situation. For example, if a person is not getting enough dietary fiber, or if a person is not taking in enough fluids, probiotics alone probably aren’t going to help much with constipation. In those situations, increased fiber and fluid intake are really the first steps in remedying the constipation problem. However, when used by a person who consumes a healthy amount of fiber and liquids, probiotics may give some aid in terms of constipation.
