Probiotics such as Lactobacillus Reuteri, also known as L. reuteri or L. reuteri Protectis, can have many potential different benefits. The truly amazing thing about probiotics is that they are, in all actuality, made up of living, beneficial bacterial. Of course, Lactobacillus reuteri and other probiotics are not the same types of bacteria that can cause illnesses and infections; rather, Lactobacillus reuteri and other probiotics are the same types and strains of bacteria that naturally will inhabit a person’s gastrointestinal system. Lactobacillus reuteri can even help a person with skin problems.
To fully understand exactly how it is that Lactobacillus reuteri can help with skin problems, it is important to understand what it is that probiotics do in the body. The bacteria in probiotics are a part of the environment of the digestive tract. As such, it is the job of these bacteria to help with the digestion of food, the absorption of minerals and other nutrients, and the function of the digestive and immune systems. In addition to these thigns, probiotics such as Lactobacillus reuteri help to create a barrier in the digestive system against a variety of harmful substances, including pollutants, free radicals, and allergens.
It is in this barrier function that Lactobacillus reuteri can help with skin problems. Whether we are aware of it or not, many skin problems such as eczema, are caused as a result of having an allergic reaction to food. This is especially common among infants. There is clinical evidence that shows that the use of probiotics in infants, for example, can help to delay the onset of excema. In one specific study, infants who were given Lactobacillus would typically not see any eczema until after the age of four years old, while infants who were given a placebo tended to develop eczema by the age of two years old.
There are still ongoing studies that look at exactly how probiotics help with skin problems. While probiotics such as Lactobacillus Reuteri can’t necessarily help with every skin problem, they can be very effective on certain types of skin problems.
