How Does Vitamin A Help My Baby During Pregnancy?

Share |

When we think about prenatal vitamin supplements, we often think about folic acid and iron. Indeed, folic acid is an important part of a prenatal vitamin. Folic acid has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of certain types of birth defects by as much as 70%. In terms of iron, we know that a woman’s body needs twice the regular amount of iron when she is pregnant in order to supply the blood flow that her growing baby so desperately needs. However, in all of this discussion about folic acid and iron, we often forget about the other important parts of a prenatal vitamin. One of these components, Vitamin A, does quite a bit to help your baby during pregnancy.

Vitamin A helps your baby during pregnancy in a variety of ways. First of all, Vitamin A is an important part in cell differentiation. A Vitamin A deficiency is also thought to lead to birth defects. Vitamin A also boosts the immune system, in particular working against respirator infections. As you can see, there are a great many ways that vitamin A can help your baby during pregnancy.

There have been some scientific studies that lead to the concern that an overdose of Vitamin A may indeed pose some danger to the pregnant woman or to her baby. However, there are a couple of factors that mitigate this risk. First of all, very few people ever get too much Vitamin A. It is much more common to have a Vitamin A deficiency. Second, most of the time prenatal vitamins provide the user with Vitamin A in an indirect manner. Prenatal vitamins don’t contain pure Vitamin A, but rather they contain beta-carotene. The woman’s body then converts beta-carotene to Vitamin A on an as-needed basis. Because of this, it is nearly impossible for a woman who is taking a prenatal vitamin with beta-carotene to have an overdose of Vitamin A.
