It is important for a woman to know when she will ovulate. Whether she is trying to conceive, or whether she is trying to avoid conception, knowing when she ovulates is a valuable piece of information. The good news is that, even for women with an irregular cycle, you can generally figure out when during the month you are going to ovulate.
There is not a way to know for certain how long after your period you will ovulate, however. Ovulation does not occur in relation to the previous period, but rather to the next period. You will ovulate 14 days prior to the start of your next menstrual cycle. This means, then, that if you have a 28-day cycle, you will ovulate roughly 14 days after your period, and 14 days prior to the start of your next period. If you have a 31 day cycle, however, you will ovulate roughly 17 days after your period, and, again, 14 days prior to the start of your next period. If you are trying to conceive, you should begin to have intercourse roughly 4-5 days prior to ovulation, as the sperm can live in the body for about 5 days.
If you have an irregular period, in which your period will vary in length from one month to the next, it can be trickier to know how long after your period you will ovulate. If this is the case, you will have to rely on other methods. There are ovulation prediction kits, for example, that can help you to know when you are going to ovulate. There are also saliva-based ovulation tests. You can also chart changes to your cervical mucus, as your cervical mucus will change in volume, color, and consistency throughout the various parts of your monthly cycle. You may even track your Basal Body Temperature to help track wen you will ovulate, although basal body temperature is much better at telling you that you have already ovulated than it is at telling you when you will ovulate.
