How Long Does Morning Sickness Last?

Share |

Morning sickness is one of the most common symptoms that a pregnant woman can encounter at all during her pregnancy. Some research suggests that 70% or more of women will experience some degree or another of morning sickness during their pregnancy. Many times, the experience of morning sickness can get in the way of the ability of a woman to enjoy her pregnancy. In some cases, morning sickness may be severe, and may even be accompanied by vomiting. The good news is that morning sickness does not last forever; in fact, it is extremely rare for morning sickness to last past the twelfth week of pregnancy.

Morning sickness is, of course, a bit misnamed. A pregnant woman can feel nausea due to her pregnancy at any time of the day, not just in the morning. For some women, morning sickness may only occur in the afternoon, for example. For a few unfortunate women, morning sickness can pretty much last all of the time, with some women having all day long morning sickness. There really is no set time of the day that all women will experience morning sickness, and there is no uniformity as to how long morning sickness lasts during the day.

It is important to understand some of the ideas behind what might cause morning sickness, in order to understand how long morning sickness lasts. While it hasn’t yet been proven conclusively, there is some evidence to suggest that morning sickness is caused by the changing levels of hormones that take place in a woman’s body. These hormone levels really kick into gear at around 6 weeks of pregnancy, which is when many women start to notice morning sickness. These hormone levels tend to drop off and then stabilize around the 12th week of pregnancy, which is, as noted, when many women stop having morning sickness.

If your morning sickness is prolonged, or is accompanied by severe vomiting, you should speak with your health care provider. If your morning sickness lasts much past the first trimester, you should also speak with your health care provider. It could be that there is some other problem, other than normal pregnancy related morning sickness, that is causing you to feel ill.
