Breastfeeding can be a difficult experience. While there are very specific benefits to breastfeeding, from the nutritional benefits that your baby will receive to the bonding opportunity that breastfeeding, breastfeeding presents some challenges, as well. One of the specific challenges that is unique to the breastfeeding mother is the challenge of clogged milk ducts. Fortunately, there are ways that a nursing mother can go about to deal with clogged milk ducts.
It is especially common for a woman to have clogged milk ducts when she is first starting to breastfeed. During those first days and weeks of breastfeeding, a new mother’s breasts can become engorged, her nipples can become cracked, and the milk ducts can become clogged. When this happens, a woman has a number of options to pick from in order to deal with the problem. For example, there are herbal creams, butters, and ointments that are specifically designed to help with clogged milk ducts. Some of the herbs include things like calendula, marshmallow root, and plantain.
There are herbal compresses, as well, that can help a nursing mother to deal with clogged milk ducts. These compresses often contain cabbage leaves or tea leaves, which have been used by mothers for centuries to deal with clogged milk ducts and to deal with other breast problems while breastfeeding. These herbal compresses may also contain the same kinds of herbs that the herbal creams contain. Herbal breast compresses can often be used either cold or warm, but when it comes to dealing with clogged milk ducts, women seem to have the best results when using the compresses warm.
In addition to herbal compresses, there are gel-style breast compresses that can help a nursing mother to deal with clogged milk ducts. Some of these may be all natural, using flax seed instead of gel. These, too, can generally be used warm or cold.
If you are having difficulties with breastfeeding, or if you have severe pain or bleeding due to breastfeeding, you should, of course, contact your health care provider.
