Stretch marks can be tremendously frustrating. Most common in pregnant women, people who have gained weight rapidly, or people who have lost a large amount of weight, stretch marks are actually a type of scarring that occurs on the skin. Stretch marks start out with a red or a purple tint to them, and over time they will tend to fade to a more glossy color, with white or silver streaks. Stretch marks are not dangerous, and won’t cause other physical problems. However, stretch marks tend to be rather unsightly.

There are some ways that people have used to get rid of stretch marks. There are any number of creams and lotions that are available over the counter that people have used to try to get rid of stretch marks. Generally speaking, while many of these products may help to cover up or to minimize stretch marks, creams and lotions often will not get rid of stretch marks. To actually get rid of stretch marks, you will probably have to turn to a more drastic option, such as treatment by a dermatologist or even a plastic surgeon.

There have been great advances in the way that medical science can treat problems like stretch marks. For example, some plastic surgeons are using laser surgery in order to get rid of stretch marks. Some health care providers may use a chemical peel, or a process like dermabrasion, to try to get rid of stretch marks. The down side to medical treatments intended to get rid of stretch marks is that insurance companies often will not pay for these sorts of procedures, as they are not considered to be dangerous to a person’s health and are, for all intents and purposes, cosmetic. In addition, not everyone is a good candidate for these sorts of procedures. It depends, in great part, on factors like your age, the tone of your skin, and even your diet, as to whether or not you will be able to get rid of stretch marks medically.
