Inducing Labor Naturally

Generally speaking, your baby knows when it is time to come out. In some cases, however, a woman may go past her 40 weeks of pregnancy, and wind up waiting with added anticipation for labor to start. If labor does not start in the days following her due date, a woman’s health care provider may decide to induce labor. There are a variety of different medications that a health care provider may use to induce labor. However, if a woman is just a few days past her due date, there may be things that she can do to help labor along naturally.

First of all, it is important to understand that inducing labor is not something you should ever attempt to do without your health care provider’s knowledge. Having said that, your health care provider may be more than willing to let you try some ways to go about inducing labor naturally if you are at or past your due date. Be certain to discuss this with your health care provider first.

One thing that you can do to help with inducing labor naturally is to use a labor cream. These products tend to rely on a variety of herbal and natural ingredients, including things like vanilla and lavender oils, to help stimulate labor. Often, these creams are used on the perineum, and can also help with the labor process in order to reduce the risk of perineal tearing or of needing an episiotomy. Even if labor has started, you may be able to use these creams to help the labor along by promoting regular contractions. Midwives and doulas have used these labor creams for quite some time as a natural alternative to hospital induction of labor.

There are also herbal teas that may help with inducing labor naturally. Teas that contain ingredients like chamomile, fennel seed, partridgeberry, and red raspberry leaf can help to relax your body, to soothe your mood, and even help to support effective contractions during the birthing process.
