Is It Ok That My Infant Is Not Sitting Up Or Rolling Over?

It is perfectly normal for parents to be concerned about their infant’s development. Whether it is crawling, speech, or fine motor skills, parents are constantly watching their infants master new and interesting skills. Yet, it can be worrisome when an infant doesn’t seem to be progressing the way that you might expect. This is true, for example, with sitting up or rolling over. A parent might wonder if it is OK that their infant is not sitting up or rolling over, for example.

The most important thing to consider when worrying about milestones like sitting up or rolling over is that every baby hits their developmental milestones at a different pace. Generally speaking, it is probably OK that your infant is not sitting up or rolling over. Most of the time, it doesn’t mean that your infant has a developmental delay, but rather that he or she is just not ready.

Having said that, it is important that you talk with your child’s health care provider about these sorts of milestones. If, for example, you talk with your child’s health care provider about your infant not sitting up or rolling over at four months of age, your health care provider will probably not be concerned but will note that this is something to watch for over the next few months. By the time your infant reaches the age of seven months old, and your infant still is not sitting up or rolling over, your infant’s health care provider may wish to do some further testing, to try to determine if there is a developmental delay.

Finally, keep in mind that there are things that you can do to help your infant develop. Just playing with your child on the floor might encourage him or her to roll over, for example. Helping him or her to sit up with your support, at first, is another way to encourage your infant to sit up. Remember, however, that he or she still isn’t going to sit up or roll over until they are ready, no matter how much you encourage them.
