Is It Safe To Diet During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is not the time to go on a diet. Experts agree that dieting during pregnancy is not safe, and it is not recommended. The fact of the matter is that pregnancy is a time that a woman should be gaining weight. In addition, because pregnancy is such a critical time for your growing baby and for you, you need to focus on nutrition and eating in a healthy way, not on dieting. During pregnancy, a woman needs to focus on the nutrients that she is taking in to make sure that her baby is getting what he or she needs.

During a pregnancy, the average woman will gain somewhere from 25 to 35 pounds. For the woman that is overweight at the start of her pregnancy, this will be more like 12 to 25 pounds, although she definitely should be gaining weight during pregnnancy. For the woman that is underweight at the start of her pregnancy, weight gain should be even more, probably in the 30 to 40 pound range. It is not safe to diet during pregnancy because dieting may prevent a woman from gaining the right amount of weight.

There are some important components to a diet during pregnancy, however. You should take in around three to five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. At least one of these vegetables should be a dark orange vegetable, and two of them should be leafy dark green vegetables. During pregnancy, your diet should include two servings of fish, chicken, extra-lean meats, or cooked peas or dried beans. You should make sure to have at least 8 glasses of water during pregnancy to avoid becoming dehydrated. You should also have around six servings of grains, and three servings of either low fat or nonfat milk products.

While it is not safe to diet during pregnancy, there is something during pregnancy that you can do to help with postpartum weight loss. The best way to be prepared for postpartum weight loss is to make sure that you are aware of what you are eating while you are pregnant. Just being in the habit of recording your food and counting your calories during pregnancy can help the pounds to come off much faster after your baby is born.
