Is It Safe To Fly During The First Trimester?

More and more, people are beginning to see pregnancy as less of a debilitating condition and more of a natural and almost magical experience of life. At one time in the not too distant past, pregnant women were advised against much activity at all, and something like flying on an airplane would probably have been out of the question. Fortunately, as medical technology advances, we are able to know with some degree of certainty what is and what is not safe to do during pregnancy. This is the case with flying on an airplane. Flying on an airplane is generally considered safe during pregnancy. This is especially true during the first trimester and during the second trimester.

Having said all of that, it is important to consider the fact that there have been some studies that suggest some connection between flying during the first trimester and miscarriage. These studies have not been entirely conclusive, however. In addition, there are other studies that seem to contradict this thesis. As of today, there is no solid body of scientific evidence that indicates that it would not be safe to fly during the first trimester.

If you do fly during the first trimester, or later on in pregnancy for that matter, there are some things to keep in mind. For women who have a high risk pregnancy, travel is generally not advised, whether by plane or by car. In addition, some airlines will have regulations about pregnancy and their passengers, although none of these relate specifically to a woman who is going to fly during the first trimester. When you do fly, be conscious that you are getting enough circulation, and that you are up at least once an hour to walk a little bit. Some women who fly during the first trimester or later on during their pregnancy also prefer the use of support stockings.
