Severe morning sickness is a serious concern. The fact of the matter is that severe morning sickness can lead to a variety of problems for both you and for your baby. From dehydration to nutritional concerns, severe morning sickness is something that you should definitely speak with your health care provider about. Having said that, there is no evidence whatsoever that severe morning sickness is a sign that your body is rejecting your baby. In fact, one degree or another of morning sickness is, in some ways, a sign that things are progressing normally. While morning sickness is not a guarantee that your baby is healthy, and a lack of morning sickness doesn’t necessarily mean you should be concerned, morning sickness does let you know that your body is interacting with your baby, in a good way.
Severe morning sickness, as noted, can cause some problems with your pregnancy, however. When severe morning sickness is accompanied by severe vomiting, it is known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Hyperemesis gravidarum literally means “excessive pregnancy vomiting.” When a women experiences Hyperemesis Gravidarum, she may have difficulty keeping enough liquids or nutrients down long enough to go through her system. This would include, of course, important things like prenatal vitamins. Therefore, severe morning sickness can lead to dehydration and other problems. In fact, if it goes untreated, Hyperemesis Gravidarum can lead to hypoglycemia, malnutrition, renal failure, atrophy, and a whole host of other ailments and problems. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is considered to be a medical emergency. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is most often treated with an IV which will provide rehydration, as well as nutritional elements that both mother and baby need.
If you are pregnant and have been vomiting severely or excessively for more than a day or so, and have not been able to keep anything down, you should contact your health care provider. Your health care provider may recommend that you go to the emergency room or the hospital. If you are unable to contact your health care provider, it is imperative that you seek help in an emergency room right away.
