There are some things to keep in mind when learning infant massage techniques at home. The first thing to keep in mind is the fact that every baby is different, and while certain infant massage techniques may work well for one child, it is likely that another child may prefer different infant massage techniques. Learning infant massage techniques at home is, in many ways, a process of trial and error in which you need to be able to determine exactly what infant massage techniques it is that your infant enjoys.

Another thing to keep in mind when using infant massage techniques at home is to make sure that the temperature in the room at home where you are doing the infant massage is warm. Infants have a much harder time than adults at regulating their own body temperature. Keeping the room warm insures that your infant will be comfortable during the infant massage. It is also important that the room is not too bright, as this cam make your infant uncomfortable as well.

Some practitioners of infant massage recommend using oil. Most massage therapists recommend a vegetable or plant based oil, rather than baby oil which is based on minerals. Plant oils are more easily absorbed in the skin, and can be digested just fine if your baby happens to put a finger or a toe into his mouth. Sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil are two of the more common oils used for infant massage.

Learning infant massage techniques at home may not only improve your baby’s mood and provide her an opportunity to relax, but it also provides an opportunity for you to bond with your infant.
