Colic is a frustrating condition, both for baby and for her parents. Colic can keep you up at night, and colic can interrupt just about any activity you might have planned. In many ways, colic can define your entire relationship with your baby, if you allow it.
Unfortunately, it isn’t always clear what causes colic. That makes treating colic somewhat of an experiment. You need to try different things to see what may or may not be able to help your baby when she’s crying due to colic.
Here are some additional strategies for coping with colic that you might consider trying:
- Think about changing formula. Now, colic isn’t usually caused by formula. If you’ve tried other things, however, it can be worth a shot. Talk to your baby’s doctor about changing her formula to one that’s soy-based, or some other formula that doesn’t contain protien from cow’s milk.
- Look into natural remedies. There are some natural remedies out there for colic that you can try. There are some herbal teas that might work. Herbal teas that contain fennel, dill, anise, peppermint and chamomile are all thought to help with colic. Of course, watch out for dosages here, and make sure that you talk to your baby’s doctor before you give him something like this.
- There are some over the counter remedies, as well. Gripe water is a solution that’s made up of sodium bicarbonate and a number of herbs. There are a number of anti-gas drops on the market, too. Here again, make sure you’re only using products designed for infants and that you check with your baby’s doctor first.
As you can see, many of the strategies for coping with colic have to do with the digestive system. One of the prevailing theories is that colic can be caused by digestive problems, and so some of these strategies are obviously geared in this direction.
