When an infant is ill, it can be difficult for a parent to know what exactly is wrong. Your little one cannot tell you what her symptoms are. She can’t tell you where it hurts. As parents, we have to watch for external signs and symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, trouble breathing, cuts and abrasions, rashes, and inconsolable crying. It can often be difficult to tell the difference between your baby being sick and your baby being fussy.

There are certain signs that will tell you that your baby is sick. The most severe of these signs should prompt you to call your doctor or health care provider. Some of these include:

– Ear infections. If your baby is tugging at his ear regularly and is crying or fussy, he may have an ear infections. The symptoms of an ear infection are especially difficult during the nighttime. For an ear infection, you don’t necessarily need to rush to the emergency room, but you should see your doctor soon.

– Eye infections. If your baby has a pinkish discharge or crust on his eyes, it is time to call the doctor. A doctor will be able to tell if the problem is an infection or if it is allergies or something else.

– Respiratory infections. If your baby has more than just a common sickness, where her phlegm is discolored or coughing is severe or prolonged, you should call the doctor.

– Difficulty breathing. If your baby is having difficulty breathing for more than a few seconds, he should see the doctor as soon as possible.

– Appetite changes. If your baby does not want to eat for more than a couple of meals, you should call the doctor.

– Lethargy or unresponsiveness. If your baby is moving slowly or not at all, it can indicate a serious problem. You should call the doctor.

– Fever. It is common for babies to have a low grade fever. Generally, it isn’t dangerous. However, if your baby’s temperature goes over 100.4 degrees for newborns or over 102 degrees for infants older than three months old, you should call the doctor.

– Vomiting. While spit-up is normal and occasional vomiting is not unheard of, if your baby is vomiting repeatedly and violently, he is sick enough for you to call the doctor.

When in doubt, it is all right for you to call the doctor when your baby is sick. Often just hearing the symptoms over the phone, your health care provider will be able to help you decide what your next course of action should be.
