Natural Ways To Cure Heartburn During Pregnancy

Share |

Most women will, at some point or another during pregnancy, be faced with a case of heartburn. It might be mild heartburn, or it might be severe heartburn. It might be frequent, or it might be occasional. However it comes about, it is something that most women are not able to avoid. The fact of the matter is that you can’t change what is going on inside your body that makes you more prone to heartburn during pregnancy. During pregnancy, your body produces much more of the hormone progesterone than it does when you are not pregnant. Progesterone serves some specific purposes during pregnancy. One of the things that is accomplished by progesterone is the relaxing of the uterine muscles. This allows the uterus to grow bigger as your baby grows bigger. Unfortunately, the same mechanism in progesterone that helps your uterine to relax can also relax the valve between the esophagus and the stomach, thereby allowing digestive acids to get through and cause heartburn during pregnancy.

The frustrating thing about heartburn during pregnancy is that many of the medications that are designed to cure heartburn during pregnancy just haven’t been tested enough to know whether or not they are safe to be used by a woman during pregnancy. In addition, some heartburn medications tend to have side effects that a woman may not wish to endure. Fortunately, there are natural remedies for heartburn during pregnancy.

Some of the best natural ways to cure heartburn during pregnancy are with herbs. There are a variety of herbal teas, for example, that can be used. These teas might include things like spearmint, orange peel, chamomile, and even marshmallow root. These herbs are all thought to help quell stomach acid. In addition to teas, there are also herbal supplements that contain some of these ingredients that may help with curing heartburn during pregnancy, as well.

In addition to this, prevention goes a long way at curing heartburn during pregnancy. Avoiding spicy foods, fatty foods, and caffeine can all help to reduce or even cure heartburn during pregnancy. Eating several small snacks and meals through the day instead of 3 larger meals may help with heartburn, because it will help your stomach from being too full. In addition, eating several smaller meals will keep you from feeling too hungry or too full, which can also help with morning sickness during pregnancy as well.
